New Words

Weird words I’ve never heard before that I’ve come across in my reading this week:

tergiversation: 1 : evasion of straightforward action or clear-cut statement : equivocation 2 : desertion of a cause, position, party, or faith

stevedoring: : to handle (cargo) as a stevedore; also : to load or unload the cargo of (a ship) in port

irruption: 1: to rush in forcibly or violently 2 of a natural population : to undergo a sudden upsurge in numbers especially when natural ecological balances and checks are disturbed

Of course, the list is longer for funny phrases I’ve come across. “Benighted ragheads.” “Everyone wants to go to Baghdad but real men want to go to Tehran.” “Muscular US intervention.” “Perpetual perishing” (in relation to creative destruction of capitalism). Caricature is a “compact visual vocabulary.” “Unfolding of Japan.” Desire for identification a dictatorial and homogenizing tendency towards “mental slavery with cheerfulness and pride.” “Philanthropy at bargain prices.” (slavery) “Natural slaves.” “An African’s sacrifice is a European saved.” “Natal alienation.”

I could keep going for a while on this shit. We’re getting to the point in our courses where the material is more recent, so American imperialism is the key theme. I’m far more engaged in class now.
